As Canada’s largest agency serving at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth, Covenant House Toronto changes lives by providing the widest range of services and support to as many as 300 youth a day.  A national leader, we educate and advocate for change by influencing public policy and delivering prevention and awareness programs. More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and after-care. To do all this, we rely on donors for more than 80 per cent of our $30.6-million annual operating budget. Our doors are open to youth 16 to 24 regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or the circumstances that have brought them to our doors. Since opening our doors in 1982, Covenant House has served more than 95,000 young people.

We are seeking a dedicated, passionate individual who is committed to supporting survivors of human trafficking who are currently or have been involved in the child welfare system. In partnership with Native Child and Family Services, 360 Kids and East Metro Youth Services this person will assist in the identification of survivors for the purpose of providing specialized supports and case management. This is a remarkable opportunity for a worker who seeks  professional and personal challenge.  The successful candidate will be responsible for direct implementation of Covenant House philosophy, mission statement, and policies as they pertain to supporting youth at risk.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Supports staff in identifying survivors of human trafficking in our programs and in our partner agencies
  • Provides counselling support to youth through a strengths bases, trauma informed framework
  • Connecting youth to community resources and social supports
  • Provides ongoing assessment of youth’s needs and responsible for the development and monitoring of case plans through case review process
  • Responsible for escorting youth to court, legal proceedings and supporting them through victim impact statements
  • Provides crisis Intervention in situations of physical confrontation, medical and psychiatric emergencies for youth who have recently experienced trauma
  • Responsible for facilitating family engagement where appropriate
  • Acts as a liaison with child welfare agencies and other referral sources to coordinate service plans for youth and document progress
  • Provides outreach to youth and youth serving community agencies to promote the program
  • Participate in program evaluation through completion of outcome tools and surveys with youth
  • Court supports as needed

Qualifications:

College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent
Minimum two years’ experience in a shelter or residential setting; knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to street youth; ability to identify, assess and intervene differentially with youth in crisis; excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of community resources. First Aid, CPR and basic computer skills an asset.

Full-time 1 Year Contract

Monday to Friday 35 Hours per Week
